Community United Child Care Centers - Westridge Addition
Waterloo, Iowa Construction completed: February 2015 Photography by Kate Bell As an NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) Accredited Center, Community United Child Care Centers (CUCCC) continues to grow and their desire to provide the best care for their children always comes first. This project consisted of the addition of four new classrooms, an activity room and a commercial kitchen, as well as the renovation of existing office space and seven existing classrooms. Designing with the children in mind came first. it was important to create fun and imaginative spaces from the time you walk in the front door to when the child leaves for the day. Hallways are designed with color and movement while classrooms are designed to be age appropriate for the children and functional for the teachers. Most interesting and unique element of the project: One of the unique challenges was to creatively turn a long straight hallway into a special space. The resulting space met the distinct needs of the staff while providing a path where children felt they were walking into a fun place to learn and play. What is the Architect's favorite aspect about the project? I enjoyed a project where vibrant and creative colors were appropriate and added vitality to the environment. |
