Project Description:
The project involved restoration of the stories above the CU restaurant and the Cellar Wine and Martini Bar. The second floor renovation created four apartments of varying sizes (studio apartment to two bedroom). The third floor ballroom was restored to its original glory and divided into two spacious apartments with open floor plan great rooms and open staircases to a lofted bedroom and balconies overlooking the city of Waterloo. A third apartment completes the third floor, creating seven apartments total, all accessible by the elevator that was added. Original elements were retained such as arched ballroom windows, hardwood floors and large plank baseboards and door frames, while contemporary touches produced up-to-date kitchens and a clean sleek look that appeals to today's renter, located down town in the midst of some of Waterloo's finest restaurants. Most interesting or unique element of the project: We were working with a building originally constructed in 1902 for the Acme Grocery Store. We were required to keep many of the existing elements, which created some interesting challenges along the way. What is the Architect's favorite aspect about the project? I love the unique spaces that were created by keeping many of the original elements but making them livable as modern apartments. I also love the fact that a building constructed over a century ago has been given new life. It's important to preserve these old buildings while we still have a chance to do so.
